Steve’s Snippets 30th April 2003

What another busy, but enjoyable week.

Congratulations to Tim Telidis (property investment) and Peter McLaughlin (Police Prosecutor) on their induction to our club on Wednesday, and enormous thanks to Brian and Jenny Hennell (ably assisted by the Watson’s, Manenti’s, Houston’s and Croft’s) for the superb organisation of the Anzac Day Breakfast last Friday. Thanks also to Vicki Wybrow and Joe Campisi for there great work cooking for some very hungry people.

Friday’s breakfast was very well attended; the weather remained (mostly) dry and the remembrance ceremony highlighted by our own bagpiper very moving.

Speaking of Brian Hennell isn’t he doing a superb job on programs. Our speaker Claire Birnie, a lovely Scots LADY (thank you Sergeant Euan) hailing from Aberdeen, gave us an excellent talk on the Alice Springs to Darwin railway. Some of the statistics were absolutely amazing, and this railway appears to be an excellent example of the good old Aussie "can do" attitude to difficult projects.

Tonite we welcome our partners along for another enjoyable evening with an excellent guest speaker that will I’m sure surprise and delight you. Tonight is also the last opportunity for the cycling committee to confirm the final arrangements for our (hopefully) huge charity cycle challenge around Sydney Olympic Park this COMING SUNDAY. For those who attended last week I’m sure you will not forget the sight of Euan modelling our new Marshal vests for use in the bike ride and fun run. They look great , should be easily visible and advertise Rotary in the process. Thanks to Peter Cipolla for producing these items quickly for us.

For those people allocated as marshals please ensure you get your marshal location map from Euan Watson, and for those on registration please listen to Allan Taylor. As I have said before this is a huge and complex project for us, and one in future years that could provide the club with a significant income.

On speaking to Graham True over the weekend I have learned that the Salvation Army "Red Shield Appeal" collection day is on Sunday May 25th. This is an important event for our club with many members involved in either collection or money counting functions. Accordingly the drive to and picnic at Ross and Joan Brown’s Yarramalong Valley property scheduled for that day will again have to be rescheduled. Sorry about that everyone bur I know nobody wants to let the Salvo’s down.

Our local Salvo officer Michael Hailthorpe will be attending the meeting on Wed May 14th to discuss our participation in the event. Your assistance as driver for a few hours in the morning will be appreciated .

As this Rotary year starts to come to (an unbelievably quick) close, President elect Keith is starting on preparations for his year, with a meeting of his new board early in May and a joint meeting of new and old boards in June. I’m sure Keith and his board have many new ideas to keep us all busy for the coming year.

Looking forward to seeing MANY of you on SUNDAY ( and thank you in advance)

Steve
