Welcome to another busy week for
our club. This is a combined snippets and bulletin for Monday and Wednesday
due to our revised schedule, and to save our hard working bulletin editor
from too much work
On Monday we welcome our sister
clubs of Concord and Burwood to hear that excellent speaker on social
matters Mr Hugh McKay.
The night will be fairly informal
HOWEVER you will be circulated with a commitment sheet for the upcoming
SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK CYCLE CHALLENGE on SUNDAY MAY 4th.
Forget the fact that this is a
bike ride, it’s a GREAT FUNDRAISING and COMMUNITY ACTIVITY with the
potential for our club (and of course ROTARY) to reach THOUSANDS of people
over the coming years.
This first ride is a big effort
to establish, and may not see huge financial returns, but if we do it well
they will come, and exponentially increase over coming years. As I have said
recently, with sponsorship and entry fees up to $40,000 is not out of the
question in future years (Castle Hill did it this year after six years of
operation)
The main point of all this is
though, we NEED your help from about 6.30am to around 1.00pm on that day.
PLEASE don’t say no, because if
we don’t have the necessary people we can’t put on the ride.
On Wednesday we will be having
our YOUTH NIGHT in conjunction with Strathfield Council, where we will be
presenting prizes to a number of young people from local schools and
sporting organisation. Tony Lanzafame will be organising the night, and this
is another new function and activity for us.
On an unfortunate note the
combined Burwood / Strathfield Meeting on Monday April 28th for Police and
Community services has been cancelled by Burwood, due to lack of cooperation
by the Burwood Police local area command.
Therefore we will be having a
normal meeting at the Golf Club on Wednesday April 30th.
Keith Byrn and I have discussed
this and we propose proceeding with our own awards with our local Auburn
/Strathfield police and possibly firefighters and SES. The probable date is
Wed June 18th. Keith and I will keep you informed.
Don’t forget, there WILL be a
meeting between Easter and Anzac Day ( 23rd) and we will be having our now
traditional and wonderful Anzac morning (Friday 25th) breakfast and memorial
service at Cape Cabarita, this year generously organised by Brian and Jenny
Hennell.
Congratulations also to John
Leftwich for receiving his PHF last week. I’m sure you will all agree John
was a worthy recipient of this honour.
By the way our club has now met
Rotary International’s request for a contribution of US $68 per member to
assist in Polio eradication, hopefully by 2005, Rotary’s 100th birthday.
We have also met ALL the criteria
to receive a Presidential Citation this year, and we have received the DG’s
blessing. Keep your fingers crossed.
At the board meeting on Tuesday
night last my well lubricated (6 bottles of red and 1 white) and well fed
board approved a donation of $500 to the Strathfield School for Seniors to
assist in computer purchases.
I also believe Fred Haddon would
be VERY happy if members considered donating old or slightly outdated
computers, printers and peripherals to his group.
Finally, I know you all listen to
everything I say and always read the bulletin, but your enthusiasm still
amazes me. Even though we weren’t meeting last week I believe George Helou
and Roy Schmidt just couldn’t keep away. I believe Roy won the raffle but we
didn’t make very much on it.
You do have to be careful these
days fellows, spies are everywhere.
Last thing, don’t forget HAIR is
coming up on Tue 29th, see Keith for tickets, and we are also working on
finalising a date with Ross and Joan Brown for another luncheon at their
weekend retreat at Yarramalong (possibly May 18th, although this clashes
with the district Assembly for Pre elect Keith and his new board) will keep
you informed about this.
I know the conference is over and
so is the fundraiser but we have to keep at it. The work we are doing is
important, so I’m not sitting back yet, and therefore you guys can’t either.
Please help us for our last two events for the year.
Enjoy your Easter break everyone,
and may the Easter bunny be generous
Steve
