       The President's View

     Wednesday 14 February 2007

A very warm Strathfield Rotary welcome to our guests for this our sixth Trish Foundation Charity Golf Day. A major service activity on our calendar, many people work hard to make the day a success. But, without the personal drive and commitment (and unique arm-twisting ability) of Niall King the day would not be the major fundraiser that it has become.

For those new to Rotary, a special welcome. Tonight is not a typical Rotary meeting, but you will get a feel for our organisation, how it operates and the work that we do. Interested in obtaining more information or joining us at one of our dinner meetings as a guest of the club? Please feel free to make contact.

The district conference organising committee needs the support of all members on 28 February to pack the 550 conference satchels. We will need all hands on deck. Peter Manenti will organise the activity – no experience necessary! My thanks to Veronica McCluskie who has kindly agreed to defer her guest speaking visit to another night.

Connie Galetta, Shirley Del Prado, Kevin Beltrame and Keith Byrn launched the Dan Murphy's fundraiser barbecue this week with good results. More details next week..

And I am happy to report that Keith Byrn has been able to arrange a visit by Peter Garrett to our club as guest speaker – a date is being worked out.

Grahame True is assisting in gaining prizes for the raffle from local firms. But we are still seeking someone to stand in for Sal Tosto as raffles chair for a few weeks.

February is an important Rotary month. Now known as World Understanding Month it is the anniversary month of the first meeting of Rotary held on 23 February 1905 and a time for all Rotarians to make an extra effort to exercise greater understanding and to seek goodwill.

"Poverty, as we know too well, is a tremendous obstacle to peace and stability ... We may think we are only helping to equip a school, supply a clinic, or build a well for a faraway community. But in truth, what we are doing is helping to build a better, more stable, and more peaceful future."

Bill Boyd, President, Rotary International

Enjoy Rotary … by getting involved!
