       The President's View

     Wednesday 13 June 2007

A sincere welcome to Silma Ihram who joined our club last week. It was a pleasure to induct Silma
and I wish her a long and enjoyable association with Rotary.

I trust that last week's vocational ethics workshop had the desired effect and that we are all a little more aware of the importance of the ethical element in our decision making. Rotary has long been recognised for its contribution to ethics in the professions.

My thanks to Vocational Service Director Kevin Freund for tackling a difficult assignment and organising the evening. Special thanks to Joe Saad and Charles Pitt for their summary comments at the end of the session – and to DG Harley Tarrant for setting an ethics objective for presidents in District 9690.

It was gratifying to see just how many club members had supported the Red Shield appeal. Thanks to Stephen Gorringe for visiting to report on the fundraising result and to present certificates.

The club can be proud of the fact that the Chalmers Road Special School bus will operate for the next two years. It was a pleasure to present a cheque for $3,500 to Principal Paul Van de Ven covering the first year (from early July 2007). President Elect Brian Johnson has committed the club to raising the amount required for the second year of operation. A sign and the Rotary wheel will be included on the bus, recognising our contribution.

Wholehearted congratulations to Eve Dutton and Harry Pickett who have had the honour of being recognised in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours. Both are now the proud recipients of a Medal in the Order of Australia. Their contributions to Rotary were a factor in both cases.

This week Travelling Rotarian Kevin Beltrame shares experiences gained when he visited Vietnam recently. I have had a sneak preview of his photographs and it will be a great evening.

Enjoy Rotary … by getting involved!

President Rod
