President's Pieces

13 August 2003

Welcome to members, guests and visitors to our meeting tonight. I particularly welcome everyone from the Police Service and your guests, I trust it will be an enjoyable evening for us all.

For those members who were looking forward to our pizza night last Monday night, will of course know that we had to cancel it due to insufficient numbers, Apologies to those who had to stay home instead and cook for themselves.

Also while we are talking about cancellations the weekend planned for 30 August at Echo Point, Katoomba, has also been cancelled due to other commitments, by a lot of members, on that date.

Last night the Board met and discussed a number of matters of which your Directors will report to members in coming weeks.

Again I remind those members who have still not paid their 6 monthly dues, which were due on 1 July 2003, to attend to their commitment as a matter of priority.

The following is provided for the interest of visitors and guests:

  • Becoming a Rotarian

Rotary is an association of some 31,000 autonomous clubs in 166 countries, Rotary International is one of the world's largest service organizations. The goal for a club's membership is to have a progressive representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests.

An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. Rotary clubs invite individuals to join and become members. If you would like to learn more about the Rotary club in your community and its various service projects, contact your local club or the Rotary Club of Strathfield.

Rotarians are business and professional people who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of people from the community that the club serves.

Through Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect on the quality of life in its community. Also Rotary programs offer opportunities to form international partnerships that help people in need worldwide. Some 1.2 million Rotarians in 30,000 clubs in more than 160 countries make significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the globe.

Membership is vital to a Rotary club's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects.

  • The membership process

Often a person being considered for membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or more club meetings to learn more about Rotary. The sponsor may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's membership committee.

Rotary uses a classification system to establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests among members and to develop a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of choosing a cross-representation of each business, profession, and institution within a community.

A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's own activity within the organization.

Anyone who is interested in membership but doesn't know any Rotarians should contact their local club directly. Alternatively anyone who wishes to visit our club, may do so at anytime and we will make sure that you are made welcome. We meet every Wednesday 6.15 p.m. for 6.30 p.m.

Have successful week.

Keith
