President Usha's Notes
10 February 2021
Dear fellows,
True humility is not
thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
C. S. Lewis
Guest Speaker
In literary circles, Salman Rushdie is as much talked about today for his
courage and the troubles it brought him as he was yesterday and the day before.
Last week, author and poetess Pooja Mittal Biswas analysed one of his most
famous books and took some in depth questions See our
Facebook entry Myths and
Legends (click). For some discussions one meeting is just too short, so we
hope to catch up another time. Besides, Janelle Watson has many more interesting
speakers lined up for the coming weeks and none of them are worth missing.
International Women's Day 2021
International Women's Day 2021 is being celebrated around the world on 8th
March. As professionals in the outside world and as home makers in our inner
world, women make immeasurable contributions which are not often obvious. This
year Women's Day falls close to our club completing fifty years and this gives
us a unique opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate women who are and have been
an integral part of Strathfield Rotary as partners, members or volunteers.
Please reserve Wednesday, 10th March
on your calendar and lookout for more details.
50th Anniversary Dinner
Our Grand 50th Anniversary Dinner and Celebration originally planned to be held
on 13th March has been postponed by a few months due to COVID19 concerns. With
the vaccination program so close at hand, holding this event after the
vaccination rollout makes a lot of sense as we expect a large gathering of the
present and past members and friends travelling from far to be here on this day.
Dates to Remember
Graffiti Removal action comes up on 28th March and as it happens every year, PP
Peter Smith will be co-ordinating the volunteers. Please contact him if you are
interested. Vocational Service Director Jan Barrett is planning for our Anzac
day service on 25th April. All things going well, perhaps this year we may be
able to hold the Youth Awards around the Youth Week in May. Our first Board
Meeting of this year is coming up on 15 February. If you have any item(s) that
you would like discussed, please forward these to any member of the Board.
A
month at a time
February is Peace and Conflict Resolution month. "This month let's celebrate
our history and the many ways that Rotary Opens Opportunities to advance world
understanding, goodwill, and peace, our ultimate mission" said RI President
Holger Knaack.
Our Rotary magazine
Many informative articles and interesting stories are available in the
RDU magazine (click) this month. One article talks quite frankly about the
growing conflict in the clubs and how to keep the clubs calm. "One of the
watchwords we use is - get curious before you get furious" says author Jean Best
who herself had left one club to join another to avoid conflict.
Rotary
International President-elect
Incoming Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta a member of the Rotary
Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, revealed the 2021-22
presidential theme,
Serve to Change Lives (click). He asked members to become more involved in
Service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to
live because it changes not only other people's lives, but also your own.
This weeks speaker
This week we hear from RAFAELE JOUDRY, the Founder & Director of Sound Therapy
International on "How to wake up ear & brain vitality with Sound Therapy".
