The President's Column

We have received a very nice note from District Governor Marilyn thanking the club for her warm welcome last week. The talk by Marilyn was down to earth and sincere. I am sure that the members who were in attendance appreciated the thoroughness of Marilyn’s research into the activities and achievements of Strathfield Rotary over many years. It was great that both Marilyn and Dudley were able to stay behind after the meeting for some fellowship “in the bar” (they didn’t have to drive home to Windsor – as they were staying very locally in readiness for their visit with Breakfast Point the next morning).

Barbecue’s galore – hopefully that also means volunteers galore! There will be commitments sheets going around this Wednesday for 3 BBQ events. Yes three!

Sunday 12/9   - Georges Family Fair

Sunday 19/9   - BMW Show of Excellence

Sunday 24/10 - Spring Fair

As 2 of the 3 BBQ’s are coming up over the next 2 weekends an urgent appeal is being made for some help

and support on the day(s). This is an opportunity for some fundraising – and to put our barbeque equipment to good use.

The Police Officer of the Year Award: There had been a concern that because of the large number of POTY nights now being organised by Rotary clubs across Sydney that the Commissioner might only attend SRC every second or third year.   Next year will also see the first State Police Officer of the Year. So it pleasing to report that despite these competing pressures Commissioner Scipione is again “booked” to officiate at Strathfield on 17 August 2011.

Dr. Helena Popovic is our guest speaker this week – and is a long time resident of Strathfield.  A Google search tells us that Helena received her first speaking award at 16 when she won the City of Sydney Eisteddfod Singles debating Championship. Her leadership skills were further recognised in 1984 when she was elected School Captain of Meriden School, and again in 1985 when she was chosen to spend a year in Japan as a Rotary Exchange Student.

Since receiving her medical degree from Sydney University in 1995, Helena has been paving the way for a new paradigm in peak health and peak performance. A specialist in lifestyle-based diseases Helena shows both men and women how to achieve excellence in every area of their life – through education, not medication. Helena will talk to us tonight on “Boosting your brain”

Cowboy logic 3 – The best way to have a quiche for dinner is to make it up and put it in the oven to bake at 325 degrees. Meanwhile, take a large T-bone, grill it, and when it’s done, eat it. As for the quiche, continue to let it bake, but otherwise ignore it.”
