The President's Column

Last week we were fortunate to have the Rev. Paul Bartlett as our guest speaker. Paul proved to be a most eloquent speaker and he entertained us with great stories of the outback – particularly the history of the Australian Inland Mission and of Rev John Flynn (of the outback and on the $20 note!).

Tonight we are pleased to welcome Ramesh Ferris as our guest speaker.  Ramesh is only in Sydney for a few days but he has generously made himself available to visit us to talk about his experiences of surviving the effects of polio and the need to end polio now.

Having been on the speaker’s circuit in India, the US and Canada - and having spoken at the Montreal RI Convention and at the UN in New York City Ramesh will no doubt prove to be both an impressive and inspirational speaker.

ShelterBox: At the AGM, which follows our regular meeting, we are required to endorse a proposal by District 9690 to “transform ShelterBox Australia into a Multi-District organisation of Rotary International Zone 8”.

Multi-District service activities are an effective and rewarding way for Rotary Clubs in more than one District to work together to address common service interests and objectives. Rotary International encourages participation in multi-District service activities

At a recent District meeting it was voted that Rotary International District 9690 Inc be party to the transforming of ShelterBox Australia into a multi-District organisation, as supported by some/all Districts in Zone 8. To be part of this, our District needs to gain agreement to this concept from two thirds of the Clubs in District 9690.

Our “Yes” or “No” vote needs to be conveyed to District at the Presidents Meeting on 10 December 2010.

Other club websites – my second favourite Rotary site is www.rckgm.org which is the website of the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile. While it is perhaps a bit corny - and it is certainly not politically correct  - it is well worth a visit!
