Wednesday 31 March 2010

It was a delightful and exciting experience to witness the cavalcade of local talent and identities, together with a wide variety of community organisations display their services in Strathfield  Square on Saturday at the March Fair. The members of the Strathfield Chamber of Commerce are an enthusiastic and energetic group, and deserve congratulations for their enterprise and effort. I am positive everybody who attended, enjoyed the experience and I would like to thank George Hallworth, Ian Johnson, Peter Smith and Suzanne Freund for proudly representing our club and spreading the word of Rotary.

A reminder that the sale of Bowelscan Kits concludes this Saturday 3 April in participating pharmacies, with completed kits final collection date on Saturday 17 April 2010. Remember, a simple test could save your life.

It was sad to receive a resignation from Brian Driver last week, but the rules of Rotary do not allow for dual membership as Brian and our club would prefer. We consider him still a full member and he will always be treated as such whenever he attends our meetings and wish him well with his work in Cowra and his membership with the Rotary Club of Cowra.

I would like members to note in their diaries the following dates that are planned as Partners Nights over the next three months. Wednesday 21st April, Youth Achievement Awards; Wednesday 12th May, with Belinda Noonan discussing her role during the Winter Olympics; Friday 28th May, when we celebrate 50years of Rotary Service by Ted Ingall and Friday 25th June for our Club Changeover.

I would like to issue a challenge to members to fossick through their homes and pockets to collect any 5 and 10 cent coins. If you are like me, I am sure you will find a considerable number. I believe we have a great opportunity to raise some funds leading into the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, on Sunday 30 May, where the coins will be separately tallied and counted as part of our club’s donation towards the appeal. We will have a “Collection Bucket” at all of our meetings up to the appeal date.

Our club has had a strong association for many years with Homebush Boys High School, particularly in relationship with Ian Albertson and student musicians providing their talent and services to many of our events. Ian approached us late last year seeking sponsorship to cover the costs of having Stephen Fisher-King, come to the Annual Performing Arts Camp, during March 2010, and direct the Voice Masterclasses, involving 13 students, from the total number of 34 students attending the camp.  Your board has agreed to provide an amount of $2,000.00 to cover the costs of the Voice Masterclasses.

Tonight we welcome Howard Bell from Amnesty International, discussing a very important topic of our human rights.

Cheers,

President Kevin
