Last week was the Literature Extension Program Presentation evening presented by the girls from Strathfield Girls High School. The girls were introduced by Paul White.
The Chairperson was Alexandra Jones who did a great job and kept us entertained with her humorous comments.
An introductory speech about the importance of reading was presented by Dharmita Padhi. She told us that children should be encouraged to read for pleasure. In reading more, children would learn more about the world and could view the world from other people’s perspective. Read her excellent presentation clickLucy Han then gave us an explanation of the program and judging process. She explained that the six books reviewed were awarded points for:
1. Plot
2. Characters
3. Purpose.The winner would be the book with the most points.
A presentation was then made in relation to each of the six books:1. “The Winds of Heaven” was reviewed by Amelia Navascues. She said that the main characters were two girls. She also said that the book was melancholic and contained surrealistic aspects.
2. “A Small Free Kiss in the Dark” was reviewed by Odelia Quek. In this book the main character is a twelve year old boy. He runs away from his adoptive family and draws pictures to make sense of the world. She said that the book was very descriptive.
3. “Stolen” was reviewed by Melanie Jiang. The main characters are a girl who lives in London and a boy who lives in Australia. Somehow the girl is transported to Australia and held captive by the boy. The reader is made to feel responsible for the girl’s predicament.
4. “Jarvis 24” was reviewed by Emma Castro. She said that this book had unusual characters and an unusual storyline. The main character goes for work experience in a car yard and his life gets more complicated from there.
5. “Liar” was reviewed by Emma Tang. The main character is a 17 year old girl who is a compulsive liar. She promises to tell the truth in the book but should we believe her?
6. “Loving Richard Feynman” was reviewed by Hannah Lott. The main character in this book writes letters to a scientist who has been dead for 22 years. It deals with issues of individuality and pressures to conform.
The judges decision was announced by Emily Wang. The winning book was “Stolen”.
Alexandra Jones then thanked those who had put a lot of effort into preparing the girls for the evening. Jenny Economy , the relieving principal, then thanked the Club for giving the girls an opportunity to give a presentation to an audience that they were not familiar with. The certificates were then presented by Gabriel Correy and President Peter.The girls were thanked by Janelle Watson.
