ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)
This week
District 9690 is hosting the 2012 RYLA camp at Blue Gum Lodge,
Springwood. With a maximum of 50 students, all of whom turned up on
the first day, the week got under way last Saturday. Past President
Kevin Freund says that two awardees,
Jessica Issa and
Kirisha Thalapalasuntheram were sponsored by Strathfield
Rotary Club and that we find out all about their adventure at the RYLA camp possibly at one of our February meetings.
Rotary
Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program that
brings together young people aged 18-25, to further develop
character and leadership skills and learn about Rotary. Our RYLA
Camp in District 9690 in Springwood is a weeklong camp organized by
our RYLA Committee. Thank you to those people who devote their
efforts to make this such a success and thank you, too, to those
clubs who sponsor the students. Some clubs don't seem to get
involved but I can tell you it is one of the most worthwhile Youth
activities we have. To say it is life-changing is a big call but,
for some of the participants, it really is.

ROTARY CELEBRATES INDIA’S FIRST POLIO-FREE YEAR
Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major
milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently
an epicentre of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording
a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease.
India’s last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal State
on 13 January 2011. The country recorded 42 cases in 2010, and 741 in
2009.
