President’s Report
23 May 2018
Last Week – Ambassador Restaurant
My thanks once again to PP Raymond for getting us back to the Ryde
TAFE Training Restaurant – The Ambassador – again, last week. As
always, we had a great evening of fellowship, food and fun, with
very little Rotary business! The room was filled to capacity (two
over capacity, actually). We unfortunately had to turn people away
as it was so in demand. One piece of information of note delivered
on the night was the announcement regarding our Club Changeover. It
has been set for Saturday, 7th July 2018, 6:30pm for 7:00pm at
Massey Park Golf Club. Please put this into your diaries. More
details to follow soon.
President’s Meeting
Last
Friday night I attended the last President’s (and President Elect’s)
meeting of this Rotary year, at the Novotel attached to the Rooty
Hill RSL. It too was a great night of fellowship and food! We had a
very interesting presentation from an Adelaide Rotarian – Mark
Huddlestone, from the Rotary Club of Seaford (which he established).
Mark set about essentially turning our entire Club philosophy on its
head, with the premise of “Less Meetings, More Service”. Just about
every Rotary tradition has been thrown out by his club, which seems
to be his test case for this new model of Rotary. Too much to
explain here, but if you want to find out more, you can read his
book on this topic: Creatures of Habit, Understanding and disrupting
the patterns of service club decline.
RESCA Night Coming Up
Just a reminder, if you’re interested and able, you may want to
attend the State Emergency Service Awards – RESCA – which includes
ACT for the first time this year. I’m sure Paolo will be happy to
facilitate your attendance tonight! The awards dinner is on 1st June
2018 at The Bankstown Sports Club.
New Member Inductions
We will be inducting five new members in the next few weeks,
starting tonight! Please come along to these meetings to show your
support for our new recruits. Tonight we formally welcome JP Baladi
to the Club as our newest and youngest member. Welcome JP!
Other inductions are planned for: 30 May 2018, 13 June 2018 and 20
June 2018.
MUNA
My thanks go to one of our newest members – Dimitry Palmer – who
looked after the Strathfield Rotary Club's representatives at the
Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) on Saturday, 19 May 2018. He
reports that the debate was lively and covered some of the topical
issues facing our world today, including human rights, terrorism,
nuclear arms, the Korean Peninsula, drug trafficking, and climate
change.
Dimitry said "The school students from District 9675 took over the
chamber of the NSW Legislative Assembly, dressed in wonderful
costumes of their respective countries for the annual District MUNA
competition. Our Club's representatives came from two of our local
schools, Meriden and Homebush Boys High School. Meriden were in
attendance as Cuba and HBHS were the Philippines. Both teams
performed very well and did our area proud’.
Thanks again, Dimitry!
This Week
OK, so this week we have a presentation from Terry Chapman of
Westconnex. I want to speak to Terry, as I’m no longer living in my
home of 30-years at Homebush because of the Westconnex project. You
see, we were compulsorily acquired for the project back in 2015,
which is why I now live in Cinque Docka. Ah… progress!
