Last Week – the Great Debate
What a great spectacle the Great Debate – The Maurie Moroney
Memorial Shield – was last week at our Club. It was a fine battle
between two very strong teams, from Santa Sabina College and Meriden
School. Santa Sabina College once again came out on top, winning by
the slightest of margins, for their third consecutive year.
Congratulations to the students and teachers at Santa Sabina, and
well done for a great fight, from the students and teachers from
Meriden.
Special thanks to our brand new adjudicator – Nick Hamilton-Kane. He
did a wonderfully thorough and thoughtful job in assessing the
performances of both teams, and I feel adjudicated accurately. Well
done, Nick; you’ve secured that job for at least the next 20 years!
Also, special thanks to PP Raymond McCluskie for his expert running
of the night, PP Peter Manenti for a brief history of the Shield,
Bradley Ayres for all the great photos, Bill Carney for his expert
time-keeping, PP Keith Byrn for his expert time-dinging, and all
that came along to make it a great success.
Presidential Peace Building
Conference
Well, the Australian leg of the Presidential Peace Building
Conference was held at the Sydney Town Hall over the weekend. I
wonder if any Strathfield Rotarians attended? I didn’t, but judging
from some photos and stories I saw on Facebook (from other Clubs),
it looked like a great event with over 500 officials and delegates
in attendance. Great for our City; great for Rotary to promote peace
in our world through such a wonderful conference.
RWHESCA Night Coming Up
It’s finally here, Paolo’s big night – this Saturday evening! I look
forward to spending the evening with many Strathfield (and other
Western Harbour) Rotarians as we honour local heroes from several
NSW Emergency Services organisations. It will also give us a taste
of our new meeting venue – Massey Park Golf Club. See you there. I’m
sure it will be a great event.
This Week – Our Last Meeting Here
And so this time has also finally arrived – our last meeting ever in
this venue, the (old) Strathfield Golf Clubhouse. We have had many
great memories in this building, and have held many fine events and
celebrations here over the past 12 years or so that we have been
meeting here. In many ways, it will be sad to say goodbye to this
place. Progress is progress though, and we all have to move with the
times, making the most of whatever is thrown at us. I believe this
is exactly how the ‘Club Move’ project team have approached this
challenge, and we have a great venue option with Massey Park Golf
Club. During this time the team will work through options and
propose to us our next permanent meeting venue. Who knows, if we can
strike the right deal, we may be back at Strathfield Golf Club, in
the new Clubhouse. We’ll see.
So, don’t forget, we’ll be meeting at Massey Park from Wednesday,
28th March 2018, for at least three months.
