President’s Report

21 February 2018

Last Couple of Weeks

Well… we’ve had a couple of Wednesday’s off recently, with the transfer to the Indian Cultural Night (discussed below), and Valentine’s Day last week. I hope you took the opportunity to take your loved one out for a nice meal on that evening! I may be checking in with some of you; I hope you didn’t waste this opportunity.

Indian Cultural Night

What a fabulous success this event was (finally, after our false start at this, last year; we have now made amends). This evening was a true celebration of Indian culture, food, colour, music, dance and song. We had a full house (over 200), with some very special guests on the evening, including a ‘surprise’ appearance from the Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council, the Hon. Philip Ruddock! Many thanks to the Sinha family (Prabhat, Neena and Pallavi) for making the night a huge success. I know that Prabhat and Neena worked very hard on the overall program, with Prabhat coordinating the broader schedule of the event, sponsors and guests, whilst Neena focussed specifically on the Cultural Program. Pallavi, of course did a wonderful job as our MC on the night, with much aplomb. There are many other people to thank, and I’m sure we’ll get a summary from Prabhat tonight. Importantly, on the night we were able to donate $10,000 to Australian Rotary Health, and $2,000 to the Sri Om Care Foundation. So this was a very successful service event too.

February Board Meeting

If you’re reading this tonight, we will have had our February Board Meeting yesterday. I’ll report on the highlights from the meeting tonight during the President’s Report section.

Reminder – District Conference

The District Conference is at Mudgee on 2-4 March 2018. I hope a few of you are able to join Christine and I up there; it will be fun! So again, there will be no Club Meeting on 28 February 2018, as we Transfer to the Conference for this meeting.

Make up Meeting in Auckland

I’ve been in Auckland, NZ for a family friend’s wedding. As luck would have it, one of the wedding guests is a current member of the Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland. As I write this, I’ll be attending their meeting tomorrow morning (7:15am for 7:30am! I’m supposed to be here on a few days’ holiday ☹. At least I’ll get a free breakfast ). Anyway, once more I’ll report briefly on my experience tonight.

Avoiding your Heart Attack – 7th March 2018

Heart attacks are one of the biggest killers these days, and arguably the most avoidable. I know that lifestyle, diet and stress factors significantly affect the likelihood of having an attack. So let’s avoid having one if we can. Come along and listen to this important talk and strike one of the things that might get us at the end, off our list.

This Week

This week we refocus on our Youth Program, with 2018 RYLA students joining us for our meeting. I often say and believe that Youth Service is arguably our most important Area of Service, as we help prepare our youth as future service leaders, with programs such as RYLA, RYPEN, NYSF and recognition via the Youth Achievement Awards. I look forward to hearing stories of our RYLArians experiences at the Yarramundi camp, back in January.
