Last Week
Did you miss me? Well, I’m really sorry I missed last week; I was
in Broome on a short break. I was looking forward to hearing Peter
Watson’s talk on Lessons from Life and Business – and
his 50+ marathons – especially, the why? I guess I’ll have to read
the Speaker Write-up in the Bulletin myself tonight to get a feel
for his presentation. Anyway, I’m back in Sydney now; see you all
tonight.
So… how was Arie in the Chair last week? I hope you were kind to
him (as you are to me). As I like to say, ‘A holiday is as good as
a change’, and my short holiday hopefully brought some positive
change to our weekly meeting style. I’m sure it was a great
success. Thanks once again, Arie, for stepping in and running the
meeting for me. In fact, this short break of mine has reminded me
of one of the dynamics I wanted to introduce to the Club this year,
and that is that the President doesn’t necessarily need to chair
every weekly meeting. I think we’ll introduce this very soon. You
know, with all the ‘rotating’ duties we will soon have, it really
will have that original ‘Rotary’ feeling: Rotating Fines Sergeant;
Rotating Speaker Introductions; Rotating Speaker Thank-you; and
finally, a Rotating meeting Chair – stay tuned, you may be first up!
Carnival of Cultures – Come Along!
Our Western Harbour Group AG – Renga Rajan – has initiated a joint
Club event called the Carnival of Cultures. We’ll hear
International Director, Prabhat Sinha talk about this again
tonight. The night is one where all the Western Harbour Clubs come
together, celebrate all the cultures and talents contained within
each club, and have a night of great fellowship. At only $30.00 per
head for excellent function centre quality food (drinks extra), it
will be a great night. Each club will be presenting a ‘performance’
– a talent show of sorts. It promises to be very entertaining.
Perhaps we’ll hear from Prabhat tonight what the plan is for our
submission? The Carnival of Cultures evening is scheduled for
Friday, 3rd November 2017 at the Belhaven Manor Function Centre,
Wentworthville. There will be a Commitment Sheet circulating this
evening. Come along!
New Members
Tonight is one of those great nights in the Club where we induct new
members – three in fact! I don’t think we’ve done that for a while
– three on the same night. These new members are all excellent
individuals that I’m sure will bring tremendous value to the Club
through their individual talents and efforts. Please make very
welcome this evening, new Rotarians: Mathew Elias, John Tsaprounis
and Farrukh Mirza.
Board Meeting
We had a Board Meeting last night. I’ll update you tonight during
my President’s Report on any items of interest. One item on the
agenda is our Club Constitution and proposed modifications to some
by-laws, led by PDG David Croft. This will be at least one item I
will be updating the Membership on tonight.
This Week’s Speaker
This week we will be hearing from Dennis van Someren from Shine for
Kids, an organisation that supports children, young people and
families with relatives in the criminal justice system. I have a
feeling there may be some personal aspects to tonight’s speech. I’m
sure it will be riveting listening.
And with that, thanks to PP Raymond McCluskie for arranging such a
great program of speakers and events for us this year; great job,
Raymond!
